Darrell Davis: After the Grey Cup

Wakey, wakey, CFL. It's time to come out of hibernation.

It happens after every Grey Cup. No matter how great the league's championship game, how much of a marketing opportunity it creates, the CFL basically disappears through December.

The CFL and its teams function with very small office staffs. When the season ends they deserve holidays, so they virtually disappear for the six weeks following the Grey Cup. No reason to conflict with Christmas holidays, world junior hockey championships, NHL activities and the end of the NFL regular season.

Once the New Year hits, the CFL stories resume. Coaching changes, players joining NFL teams, potential free agents and re-signings are again being mentioned in the sportscasts.

The interest will continue building, but there's got to be a better way to capitalize on that tremendous Grey Cup game that was played way back in November, in Toronto, when the Ottawa Redblacks upset the Calgary Stampeders in overtime. It seems so long ago.
