U of R women's basketball star signs contract
Joanna Zalesiak is soon to be a professional basketball player.
The former U of R Cougars star is a former Canada West MVP and a CIS First team All-star.
Next season she'll suit up for Energa Torun, a team in Poland's top league.
Cougars head coach Dave Taylor wasn't surprised that she signed a pro contract.
He said it was expected that after three years as a Cougar she would turn pro. After all, she played a season of pro before coming to Regina.
"We knew this was the summer she'd be looking to go over seas," said Taylor.
He noted that they knew Zalesiak would have to wait until after the Olympics before an offer was tendered.
It isn't every day that a former CIS women's basketball player turns pro - let alone in one of Europes top leagues.
"To sign in that type of league is rare for players coming out of Canadian universities never mind coming out of the University of Regina," said Taylor.
Zalesiak's deal is for one year, but Taylor imagines she'll be a pro as long as she wants to be one.
"I fully expect her to play pro for the next 8 to 10 years," he said.
