Hockey is returning to its roots in Regina on Saturday, with the second annual Prairie Pond Hockey Challenge set for Wascana Lake behind the Conexus Arts Centre.

Mike Jensen with the Saskatchewan Hockey Association confirmed the ice is indeed thick enough for safe play.

"I was probably the only person in the province jumping up and down when we had that -43C weather that froze the Wascana Lake just enough," he said.

Thirty teams will be competing for the title, taking to the ice at 9 a.m.

The event also features public skating and other activities.
