The work has already begun on the 2013-14 edition of the University of Regina Women’s Basketball team.

Head coach Dave Taylor announced Wednesday they’ve received commitment from Caitlin Zacharias and Sara Hubenig, both of whom last played high school basketball in Regina.

Zacharias joins the Cougars from the Riffel High School where she helped lead the Royals to the city championship game. She was also named an all-star in 2011, 2012 and 2013; she also played for Saskatchewan’s under-17 team the last two years.

“Caitlin brings a tremendous work ethic to our program and has improved every year as a player because of it,” Taylor said in a news release send out by the school. “With her athleticism and drive, she is exactly the type of player we want and she’ll be able to help us in the very near future.

Hubenig spent the last few years playing for LeBoldus High School where she led the Golden Suns to the city and provincial championship, and was named an all-star along the way.

“Sara reminds me of Danielle Schmidt when she was coming out of high school,” Taylor said in that same release. “And if Sara commits to developing as a player, she’ll have the opportunity to become an elite lock-down defender like Dani was.”

The Cougars have lost a number of their starters, including Michelle Clark, Danielle Schmidt, Lindsay Ledingham, and Brittany Read, after winning the Canada-West Championship in 2013, they followed that up with a second place finish at the national championships that were held in Regina.
