Regina hosts 1st Prairie Grand Volleyball Tournament

The first-ever Prairie Grand Volleyball Tournament is taking place this weekend at the Regina Rugby Park.

The tournament is raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Alan Hubert organized the event after a university friend was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a rare form of cancer.

“I have a friend I played volleyball with at university, and she’s been battling a cancer called LMS … for about three years now,” said Hubert, who is raising some funds directly for her today.

Even though it’s in its first year, Hubert has great expectation for the future saying, “I’d like to double (our attendance) every year.”

Across eight sand courts and 12 grass courts, 22 teams will be competing for a top prize of $500.

With team names like Get Smashed, Wilson!, Sets on the Beach, Stranger Danger, and Sets on the Beach 2, the mood is light hearted.

Shari Dueck came down from North Battleford to play in tournament.

“Beach volleyball is always alot of fun to play with, so when we heard about the tournament we, without hesitation, decided to enter a team,” said Dueck who has played university level volleyball.

Unlike Dueck, Carolyn Draper has slightly less experience.

“Come on out and give it your best shot, because we all suck,” she said, making her team Sex on the Beach 2 erupt with laughter.

“We’re all just here to have fun and none of us are that skilled,” said Draper.

The tournament ends Sunday at 2:45 and will be back next year.
