The Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping that some new blood on the roster will finally lead to their first win of the season.
The 0-6 team will try for that first victory on Saturday night at the Rogers Centre in Toronto with a roster that will look pretty different compared to last week’s game in Edmonton.
“We have some guys that have been working very hard in practice and they’ve been showing a lot of things,” said head coach Corey Chamblin.
“The one thing I told those guys is ‘your work doesn’t go unnoticed.’ So, if they can do those type of things in a practice, I want to see what they can do during a game.”
Earlier this week, Chamblin suggested they might look at different players on their roster in the second half of the season. With the team still winless, it’s time to start that.
Not only will the moves give the team a chance to see what some of these other players can do, it might actually inject some fire onto the field as these players will be anxious to prove they deserve a starting spot rest of the year.
“That’s a part of it. Not that the other guys were lifeless. The other guys are doing some things that are outstanding in different areas,” said Chamblin.
“I think it’s just about putting the right guys on the field, the right mix, to do those things we need to do.”
Among the names that will make their season debut are running back Steven Miller and defensive back Mark LeGree.
LeGree has been sidelined all season with an unknown injury after being the team’s most-outstanding rookie nominee last year.
“It’s actually been eight weeks because I didn’t play in the pre-season games. I’ve just waiting my time and being patient and it’s finally here,” said LeGree.
LeGree could provide a spark for a secondary that has yet to produce a turnover this year. Last year, LeGree tied for the team lead with four interceptions.
For Miller, it’s finally a chance to get back on the field. He’s either been a scratch or on the practice roster all season.
“It’s not fun, I’ll tell you that much,” said Miller.
“My opportunity is right in front of me. So, now I’m just going to do everything to make sure I do well.”
Miller will bring a different dimension to the backfield with his breakaway speed. Anthony Allen will sit in his place.
First-year receiver Devin Wilson will also make his CFL debut.
