Saskatchewan-born Buffy Sainte-Marie has taken home Canada’s top music award.
It was announced Monday night in Toronto that the internationally renowned singer, born on the Piapot Cree Nation, had won the Polaris Music Prize for her album “Power in the Blood.”
“Well I’m sure surprised,” Sainte-Marie, said in a release. “I’m very very grateful. I’ll use some of the money to upgrade my studio.”
Sainte-Marie was born on the Saskatchewan First Nation but was later adopted and grew up in Massachusetts. She returned to her home community and province many times over the years.
Throughout her extensive career she’s played with greats like Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell. She became known around the world for her 1960s protest anthems and the Academy Award-winning hit “Up Where We Belong.”
Sainte-Marie is the first artist born in Saskatchewan to take home the honour. On top of bragging rights, the winner also takes home $50,000.
