Regina police won't name businesses targeted by PIN pad fraud

Regina police say there is no need for the public to know where scammers used fake card readers to get the bank information and pin numbers from scores of customers.

It happened at a couple of Regina business – likely fast food outlets in two parts of Regina – back in spring.

Just this week, people have shared their stories with CJME who are now seeing bank accounts drained by someone in New York City.

However, Staff Sgt. Bob Koroluk says there is no danger for the public at those businesses, which he says were also victims of the fraud.

In the scam, someone switched out the legitimate pin card reader for their own, and was then able to record debit card numbers and pin numbers. It works against those who swipe the cards, not for those using a “chip” card.

Koroluk says the same criminals may have been responsible for the same thing happening in Saskatoon just a short time after the Regina scam.

Police say you should check your own bank accounts for any sign of debits which you do not recognize.
