Pats down Oil Kings 5-3 for 2nd straight win

The Regina Pats once again made things interesting at the Brandt Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Before an announced crowd of just over 3,100 people, the Pats once again came from behind for a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

“We had a lot of confidence in that dressing room and put a lot of goals on the board,” said Brooks.

“I thought we played really good. We were in their end for most of the game.”

On Friday evening, the Pats trailed 5-3 against the Vancouver Giants before scoring twice late in the third and again in overtime to secure a 6-5 win.

Sunday’s game was a big one for two of the Pats top scorers so far this year as forwards Adam Brooks and Lane Zablocki both scored twice and added an assist in the victory.

For Zablocki, the three points gives him a team leading nine points.

“I didn’t expect come into this league and jump in as quick as I have. I still have a lot to learn but it’s always a bonus to come in like this,” said Zablocki.

Dario Meyer opened the scoring for Edmonton not even two minutes into the game on a breakaway giving the Oil Kings a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Brooks scored on a shorthanded breakaway of his own tying the game at one. Tyler Robertson gave the Oil Kings the lead again.

Andrew Koep extended the Oil Kings lead 3-1 early in the second by scoring on a Daniel Wapple rebound.

That’s when the Pats started to take their play to another level outshotting the Oil Kings 16-8 in the period with Zablocki finding the back of the net twice and Brooks and Rykr Cole adding goals of their own for a 5-3 lead heading into the third period.

“Even in the first were out-chancing them. We started to clean up on the three-on-twos we were giving them,” said Cole.

“In the second, we really turned it on with some shots on net. We got the powerplay rolling. Everything started to click.”

Things got chippy in the third period with 18 penalties handed out but no scoring gave the Pats their second win in a row and third on the season.

3. Lane Bauer (EDM) – The Oil Kings forward was the team’s top play maker with a pair of assists.

2. Adam Brooks (REG) – Brooks was strong all game long with his two goals and one assist.

1. Lane Zablocki (REG) – Like Brooks, Zablocki had two goals and one assists. Zablocki created a number of other opportunities and drew a few Oil Kings penalties.

The Pats now hit the road for a five game road-trip starting Tuesday night in Medicine Hat with stops in Lethbridge, Edmonton, Calgary and Kootenay. They’ll return home to host the Prince Albert Raiders on Oct. 25.
