Minor hockey hopeful partners will chip in for new Saskatoon rink

Hockey and ringette players in Saskatoon could soon be skating on new ice as the city looks for partners after contributing $1 million in either cash or land to build another rink.

“I think there’s a couple soft ones out there that may get a little excited now that there’s some commitment from the city to get involved,” Kelly Boes, executive director of the Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association, told News Talk Radio’s Brent Loucks Show.
 
He said it’s a good start, and necessary for the city. The association is always looking for more ice, he said, adding that many teams still have to go out of town for practices.
 
There hasn’t been a new ice surface in Saskatoon since Harold Latrace built its second rink in 1998. The last city-built arena went up in the 1980s.
But what the city is lacking is a mid-range facility with ample space for spectators, Boes said.
 
“It would be great for this city I think and it would also draw in, I think, lots of events that we’re not even thinking about right now that are just in that smaller range,” he said.
