The low loonie could actually have some positive spinoff benefits for the Saskatchewan tourism industry.
Harvey Kroll is the president of the Saskatchewan Outfitters Association and owns the Hatchet Lake Lodge.
“For a lot of us it certainly is a positive note. I mean a lot of us charge in U.S. funds, so it certainly helps our bottom end,” he said.
“For all sectors in tourism it’s definitely a good factor as far as more U.S. customers coming into the country with the lower dollar.”
Even with the Canadian dollar holding a higher value for several years, outfitters like Kroll have still seen a steady influx of American customers.
“Our numbers, as far as clients coming in from the U.S., have increased over the last couple of years just because the U.S. economy has picked up, and the dollar change has certainly made a big difference in all sectors as well,” Kroll explained.
The hunting and fishing industry brings in $100 million worth of business to Saskatchewan each year. Kroll says outfitters are positive about the state of business and hope to see it grow.
