The University of Regina Rams have a new head coach for the time being.
Mark McConkey was named the team’s acting head coach on Thursday after the announced departure of the team’s previous head coach Mike Gibson on Sunday.
McConkey joined the Rams coaching staff last April when he was named the team’s offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and academic coach.
Before joining the team in a coaching capacity, McConkey was a receiver for the Rams from 2007 through 2013 where he finished his career with 180 catches and 1,991 yards.
The Calgary native has two degrees from the university receiving a bachelor of kinesiology in 2012 and a bachelor of education in 2014.
He was also previously a teacher at Greenall High School in Balgonie where he was the school’s head basketball and track and field coach before joining the Rams.
A search to hire a full-time head coach is already underway.
