Sask. has largest year-over-year bankruptcy surge among provinces

Saskatchewan saw the largest year-over-year jump in bankruptcies of any province, inn November, according to the federal Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.

In a report released Friday, the office’s numbers showed the 114 consumers and businesses applied for bankruptcy last November, an 81 per cent increase over November 2014.

The national one-year increase in November bankruptcies was one per cent.

One hundred and two consumers declared bankruptcy, up 70 percent, while the number of businesses quadrupled to 12.

Canadian consumer bankruptcies inched up 0.6 per cent year-over-year to 5,124, while 283 business bankruptcies contributed to a national 7.6 per cent increase.

Comparing years, Saskatchewan saw a 4.1 per cent increase in total bankruptcies to 1,208 in 2015 compared to 2014, while nationally bankruptcies fell 1.9 per cent.
