It turns out the blockbuster film Deadpool has more than one Saskatchewan connection. An actor who hails from Assiniboia can be seen on the big screen, alongside Ryan Reynolds, in the Marvel flick.
Style Dayne Stenberg, 26, lives in B.C. now, but grew up in southern Saskatchewan. He plays Jeremy the pizza guy in the wildly popular movie.
“He is a person that stalks women, and someone tells Wade Wilson, or Deadpool, to kill me, so there’s a price on my head,” said Stenberg describing his character in the film.
Stenberg estimates he is in the film for three or four minutes with a significant part involving Reynolds, who plays the character Deadpool.
“He’s the epitome of wanting to work with someone,” Stenberg said about Reynolds. “He’s so giving. He always had something new to do in every single take. He’s very nuanced, and he’s also very spontaneous.”
Stenberg said he is surprised by the movie’s popularity in its first two weeks in theatres. As of Sunday afternoon, boxofficemojo.com said Deadpool had earned more than $235 million since its debut.
Stenberg said his friends and family love the film, but he hasn’t had the chance to speak with his grandmother about it yet.
“She’s usually my toughest critic, so I definitely want to chat with her.”
As for what this movie has done for Stenberg’s career, he said he’s received a few more calls since Deadpool’s release, and hopes the exposure will help accelerate his career.
Stenberg talked about the difficulty of becoming a successful actor.
“I think that there’s a role for every single person out there, and I think that if you really believe in yourself and if you really put your head down and push your way through and work hard at it, you can make it.”
The Saskatchewan son is currently part of a talkback series called Tuesday Night Live. Every month Stenberg hosts and produces the show with all the proceeds going towards the non-profit organization Project Limelight.
