Test on 1st suspected sexually-transmitted Zika case in Sask. inconclusive

Saskatchewan does not, officially, have its first case of sexually-transmitted Zika virus.

In March, the province announced that it had its first suspected case of sexually-transmitted Zika after a woman presented with symptoms consistent with the virus. She’d had sex with a man who’d been diagnosed with Zika after traveling to a country where the virus is prevalent.

On Wednesday, the National Microbiology Laboratory said the tests were not conclusive.

The woman’s illness was clinically compatible with Zika, but the case hasn’t been confirmed, and therefore won’t be included in the Public Health Agency’s national count.

If it had been confirmed, it would have been the first case of sexually-transmitted Zika in Canada. Saskatchewan had its first person test positive for the virus in February. The person had visited a Zika-infected country.
