Sask. doctors oppose changes to assisted death bill

The association representing Saskatchewan doctors is disappointed that the Senate has decided to amend Bill C-14, the proposed legislation around assisted dying.

According to the Saskatchewan Medical Association, without federal legislation patients and physicians are in a vulnerable position.    

SMA President Dr. Intheram Pillay says that members would like to see the bill passed as it is without any amendments.

“Bill C-14 as it stands will give our physicians better clarity, especially those willing providers that are seeking to assist patients seeking medical assistance in dying.”

Pillay said that the proposed amendments to bill C-14 will make the situation around assisted dying more complicated.

“These amendments will unfortunately cloud the situation in terms of causing more complex problems when it comes to assessing eligibility.”

Pillay said that the original bill did a good job striking a clear balance.
