'A slap on the hand:' family of hit and run victim disappointed in charges

News of an arrest first brought relief to the sister of Jamie Gallon.

“I was hoping justice would prevail — until 10 minutes ago when I found out the charges,” said Brenda Spencer.

Elijah Beros, 37, was arrested and charged with failure to stop at the scene of the accident involving death. 

But Spencer said she wanted to see a charge related to Gallon’s death.

“It’s not right. He’s not getting anything regarding the death of my brother,” Spencer said on the phone from Ontario. “He took my only sibling and he’s walking away with nothing — a slap on the hand.”

Regina police said the collision was an accident, as Gallon was cycling at night in dark clothing.

“It’s still wrong. You took a life. There should be consequences,” Spencer said of the circumstances. “It could be the one time he didn’t have something (reflective) or bright on, but this shouldn’t have happened. He shouldn’t have fled the scene.”

Spencer said she’d look into whether or not more charges could be coming. But Regina police don’t expect any additional charges.

Gallon’s family was able to raise enough money to bring his body home to Ontario, but Spencer said there is still more planning to do before they say goodbye.
