Regina's mayor hoping revenue sharing remains unchanged in deficit challenge

Regina’s mayor will fight for his share of municipal revenue sharing from now until the provincial budget is released.

Municipalities get a one per cent share of provincial sales tax, but as the government looks to plug the deficit, that is in jeopardy.

“When you have a five per cent reduction in revenue sharing in 2017, a possibility of a change in the middle of our calendar year is a concern,” Mayor Michael Fougere argued.

Municipalities have only property tax payers as its only base source of funding. Fougere contends municipal leaders can’t keep asking for more from them.

As the premier considers “everything on the table” to plug the deficit, Fougere and other municipal leaders hope revenue sharing will be left unchanged, even if it means tax changes elsewhere.
