The Regina Pats continued their dominance Saturday night with a 4-3 overtime win against Red Deer.
The win marks the Pats 11th straight victory and keeps their firm grasp on first place in the WHL.
The first period was marred by several penalties before any points were scored. Jordan Roy of the Rebels and Braydon Buziak were given five-minute majors for fighting halfway through the first, followed by penalties by Brandon Schuldhaus, Austin Wagner and Brandon Hagel before the Rebels got on the board.
Austin Pratt got one past goaltender Tyler Brown to give Red Deer a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.
That Pats were given three powerplay opportunities in the second, and Connor Hobbs capitalized off the final one tying the game with 36 seconds left in the frame.
Adam Brooks scored just 26 seconds into the third to give the Pats the lead, but the Rebels would respond with two of their own about a minute apart to take the lead back. It didn’t hold, however, with Wagner breaking through to tie the game up just 17 seconds later.
The tie held for the rest of the third period pushing the teams into overtime.
Three minutes in Josh Mahura played the hero with an assist from Austin Wagner.
The Pats now hold a six-point lead on first place in the WHL.
The fifth place Everett Silvertips will be in town to play the Pats on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Brandt Centre.
