Two early goals by the Wheat Kings ended up being too much for the Pats to overcome in Brandon Friday night.
The Pats play three games in four days this weekend and did not get off to the start they hoped for, dropping the contest 5-3.
Brandon’s Baron Thompson scored just one minute and 42 seconds into the first period and was quickly followed up with a goal from Nolan Patrick about two minutes later.
Regina didn’t get on the scoreboard until the second period, but not before Brandon made the score 3-0 with a second-period powerplay goal courtesy of Ty Lewis.
Thirty seconds later, Connor Hobbs put the Pats on the board for the first time, netting his 26th of the season.
However, the Wheat Kings’ powerplay caused more problems for the Pats when Jeff de Wit took a two-minute penalty for slashing.
The extra man helped Schael Higson score the eventual game winner with 1:02 left in the second.
The Pats found some fight in the third period and Austin Wagner scored the Pats’ second goal of the evening about a minute and a half into the final frame.
Adam Brooks scored the Pats’ third goal on the powerplay to leave the Pats within one, but the Wheat Kings came back to seal the deal, scoring the insurance goal with 90 seconds left in the game.
Brooks scored his 300th career point in the loss.
The Pats are back in action Saturday evening against the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
