A group of people were peacefully protesting Friday, in a bid to keep commercial development out of Wascana Park.
The ‘No Business in the Park!’ citizens group was formed due to the approval of the Conexus credit union to be built on park land.
Back in August the city donated 2.6 acres of land in Wascana Centre to the University of Regina, which will be leased to Conexus.
.”The problem is, the park is not for business,” Lorraine Weidner said. “Even the city council has said that all office development should be kept in the downtown area.”
She added the public never got a say in the decision-making process.
“many people don’t know this is happening,” said Weidner. “The public hasn’t really been informed, we haven’t really had any control in it or any decision making power for it and most people in Regina don’t even know it’s happening.”
The group handed out information pamphlets and more information about the group can be found on their Facebook page.
Last year city council approved a plan that will allow Conexus credit union to build new office space near Darke Hall and the design phase has just started.
