“It’s pretty cool.”
Those are the words in a news release from Regina Pats forward Dawson Leedahl after it was revealed Monday he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s New York Rangers.
Leedahl, an undrafted free agent, continued by saying “you grow up your whole life trying to make the NHL as a little kid and to finally get something (a contract). It’s a big step towards it.”
The 21-year-old had a breakout season in 2016-17, recording 35 goals and 54 assists for 89 points. The Saskatoon native has also been productive in the post-season, adding 11 goals and 23 points in 19 games.
Previously, Leedahl’s best season was in 2013-14 with the Everett Silvertips recording 33 points.
The Pats acquired Leedahl in a trade with the Silvertips in July 2016.
In his WHL career, Leedahl has 72 goals and 190 points in 297 games.
