Scott Moe addresses deadly highway crash

The perceived frontrunner to replace Premier Brad Wall addressed questions on Friday about a fatal collision.

Rosthern-Shellbrook MLA Scott Moe said the incident in question happened in 1997, when he was travelling on a gravel road near Shellbrook to work on his farm.

He said he didn’t come to a complete stop as he approached the highway. The sun was on the horizon as he collided with another vehicle. A woman died on scene.

“It was a life changing event for me. I know it was for the family involved, for all those involved,” he said.

“It is something that I live with each and every day. It is something I think of each and every day. It’s just something that doesn’t go away.”

Moe said alcohol was not a factor in the collision, but he did receive a ticket for driving without due care and attention and for failing to come to a complete stop.

“I have been forthcoming about this with my constituents and the media, including during the 2016 general election when I responded to media inquiries with these details,” Moe said.

This isn’t the first time Moe has had trouble behind the wheel. He was charged with impaired driving in 1992.

Moe has talked about the incident in the past, but it appears there are people who want the information on the forefront of conversation again. Moe said he isn’t sure who’s raising the story again.

He is still running to be the leader of the Saskatchewan Party.
