There is so much being made regarding Serena Williams, we need to talk about Naomi Osaka.
The young Japanese, rising star, may be just starting her climb to the top of the women’s tennis world as she showed tremendous poise in very difficult circumstances in the U.S. Open Women’s Final.
After the semi-final, Osaka was asked how she was able to fight off 13 break points to win. She said, I really wanted to play Serena.
Why?
Because she’s Serena, she responded.
Osaka has grown up with Serena Williams winning grand slam after grand slam and dreamed of getting there, being the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam.
And she achieved that, by besting her idol. It was the second time she beat Serena Williams this year.
Osaka’s mother didn’t talk to her family for years because they were angered by her relationship with a black man. Osaka, raised in the United States, was booed in her moment in the sun.
You can blame Serena’s actions for that if you like but also credit Serena who tried to turn the crowd back in Osaka’s favour.
We saw a new champion on and off the court on Saturday and likely a woman you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the years ahead.
