The Saskatchewan Roughriders are hoping to hoist the Grey Cup this season, but now we’re learning team also wants to host the championship game in 2020.
The Riders surprised fans on Monday night, confirming they will officially submit a bid to the league to host the Grey Cup two years from now.
The 101st Grey Cup celebrations in Regina in 2013 are a favourite memory for many fans who saw the Green and White come out victorious for only the fourth time in the team’s history and the only time on home turf.
“This is extremely exciting. A wonderful opportunity to showcase our city, our brand new stadium to the country again,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said.
He didn’t have numbers on what it might cost to host the Grey Cup but said the city is working in partnership with the Riders and the province could be involved in some way through tourism and economic development.
“It’s all about showcasing our city. We have the best team in Canada, the best stadium in Canada, the best fans in Canada – we always put on the best Grey Cups in Canada.”
Prior to 2013, Regina hosted the Grey Cup in 1995 with the theme of ‘Huddle Up in Saskatchewan’ and once again in 2003.
This year’s championship game is in Edmonton, while the 2019 Grey Cup will be played in Calgary.
