You have to be a pretty special coach in any league to get a reaction out of a fan base like Wally Buono gets out of Rider Nation.
Whether they’re chanting his name or yelling at him to get off the field, Rider fans have a special place in their hearts for the godfather of the CFL.
Buono has been coming here for over 40 years as a player, coach and manager. He has more wins than any other coach and maybe that’s why fans like giving it to him. He beats the Riders more often than not.
Of course, there is a chance this isn’t the last visit for Wally. The Lions could be visitors again in the playoffs in either the Division Semi-Final and maybe even the Division Final.
Wally did tell the Green Zone he had one wish for the Riders; that they’d have put a roof on the new stadium. I know he’ll get some support in Riderville with a comment like that.
And to be honest, he may just get a much-deserved ovation on Saturday when he’s announced as the head coach of the Lions. Then you can start the Wally chant.
