The bond between sisters is a little bit deeper on Saskatoon’s Aden Bowman Collegiate basketball team.
The Bears senior girls team boasts two sets of sisters: Mira and Sona Witt and Ella and Anna Wiebe.
Ella said playing with her older sister is “kind of just normal,” because it’s something they’ve always done, but she learns a lot from it.
“I’d venture to say we have quite the connection on the court,” added Anna.
“All my best games are when she passes the ball to me and just plays. We work well together and I think it makes the team better.”
Though that doesn’t mean it goes swimmingly all the time – they are sisters after all – there is one place they don’t get sick of each other and that’s on the court.
“I think we need each other on the court – that works well,” Anna stressed. “At home – that’s a different story.”
Mira and Sona play the same position, so they don’t play on the court at the same time very often. But Sona said she learns a lot from her sister by watching her.
And in many ways, Mira is the reason Sona plays basketball.
Besides the genetic connections between the two sets of sisters, Mira and Anna and Sona and Ella have been best friends since they were children.
Sona picked up the sport after watching Mira and Anna.
“My best friend (Ella), who is (Mira’s) best friend’s younger sister, also wanted to play, so we decided to do that together from watching our older sisters play,” Sona said.
“It’s really cool actually,” Mira said of playing with both her sister and her best friend. “We’ve grown up with (Anna and Ella) … so it’s a very unique experience playing on club teams with them and having their dad coach the club team and then coming here and getting to play with them.”
Mira and Sona answered with a resounding yes when asked if they get sick of all the time they spend together, but they also cherish the extra time as Mira heads off to UBC Okanogan to play university basketball next year.
“It’s definitely going to be something I haven’t experienced before. I’m sad to see her go but I’m also really excited to see what it holds (for her),” Sona said.
“I think once I’m gone I’ll especially miss it a bit,” Mira added. “So it’s nice to get it in now and have three years of it. I’m grateful for that.”
Aden Bowman is one of eight girls teams competing at this weekend’s Luther Invitational Tournament in Regina.
It runs through Saturday night.
