Changes to standardized training requirements for Saskatchewan semi drivers come into effect Friday.
“These changes will improve safety on our province’s roads by ensuring Class 1 drivers receive more rigorous standardized training, based on strengthened curriculum requirements,” Minister Responsible for SGI Joe Hargrave said in a media release.
The changes initially were announced in December after the provincial government consulted with representatives of the trucking industry, training schools, stakeholders and other jurisdictions.
While the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in April turned a spotlight on training standards for semi drivers, the province has been working on the changes since 2017.
As a result of the new requirements, drivers looking to secure a Class 1 commercial licence in the province now must undergo at least 121.5 hours of training, with a focus on such things as basic driving techniques, professional driving habits, vehicle inspections and air brakes.
The changes also will force drivers to go through more demanding tests, and road tests will be done only by SGI examiners.
The new regulations won’t apply to drivers who currently have their Class 1 licences.
More to come.
