A three-goal outburst in the third period helped the Regina Pats defeat the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 in WHL action Friday at the Brandt Centre.
The Pats, who were playing their final home game of the 2018-19 regular season, snapped a seven-game losing streak in front of 6,484 spectators. Regina improved to 19-45-1-2, while Brandon fell to 30-29-4-4.
The teams are to complete their regular-season schedules Saturday in Brandon.
The Wheat Kings led 2-0 after the first period Friday, with Cole Reinhardt and Luka Burzan supplying the goals.
Cole Dubinsky and Sergei Alkhimov scored for the Pats in the second period, sending the game to the third period tied 2-2.
Braydyn Chizen put Brandon up 3-2 at 1:12 of the third, but Liam Schioler (at 9:13), Brett Clayton (at 9:47) and Alkhimov (at 10:44) scored goals in a span of one minute 31 seconds to put the Pats up 5-3.
Burzan cut the lead to one at 11:40, but the Wheat Kings couldn’t get the equalizer.
Dean McNabb made 34 saves in the Regina net. Brandon goaltender Jiri Patera stopped 39 shots.
Before Friday’s game, the Pats announced their individual award winners for the season.
The winners were: Austin Pratt (player of the year, most sportsmanlike player, top scorer); Schioler (most popular player, community service award); Nikita Sedov (top defenceman); Duncan Pierce (unsung hero); Riley Krane (rookie of the year); Logan Nijhoff (scholastic player of the year); and, Max Paddock (three star award).
