The view of the field from the AGT Lounge at Mosaic Stadium will look a lot different in October for the NHL Heritage Classic than it did Friday when the countdown was officially kicked off.
The lounge was filled with NHL bigwigs — Mark Chipman from the Winnipeg Jets, John Bean of the Calgary Flames, Chris Campoli with the NHL Players’ Association and NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly.
Tickets for the game will go on sale April 25 at 10 a.m. Season-ticket holders for the Jets and Flames will have an opportunity to get their hands on pre-sale tickets in early April, and Evraz Place Backstage Club members will be eligible for those as well.
Daly couldn’t say how much tickets would cost, but he said the NHL strives to make them affordable.
Everyone seemed excited at the prospect of bringing the game to the Queen City. Several praised Mosaic Stadium.
“You guys nailed it with this building, you really did. So, I think it’s brilliant to play it here,” said Chipman.
Mayor Michael Fougere was on stage at the event as well. He said events like the Heritage Classic were what they were going for when they built the new stadium.
“We want to have more events happening, animate this building, use it as much as possible,” Fougere said. “So these kind of activities, these events, are what we’re looking for, (what) we’re trying to do.”
Regina is the first city without an NHL team to host the Heritage Classic. Daly said it was attractive because Regina is just about equidistant between Winnipeg and Calgary, and there’s a history of hockey here.
“We knew this market was hungry for sports, and particularly for hockey, and we thought, clearly, it was an appropriate time to bring the game here,” he said.
