The Regina Pats wrapped up their 2018-19 WHL season Saturday with a 5-4 shootout loss to the host Brandon Wheat Kings.
Luka Burzan’s goal in the fifth round of the shootout lifted the Wheat Kings to the victory.
Regina finished the season with a 19-45-1-3 record and didn’t qualify for the playoffs. Brandon, which was eliminated from playoff contention with Friday’s 5-4 loss in Regina, completed its campaign with a 31-29-4-4 record.
In Saturday’s game, Ty Kolle scored two goals in regulation time for the Pats, who got singles from Carter Massier and Austin Pratt. Braydyn Chizen, Linden McCorrister, Connor Gutenberg and Ben McCartney scored in the first 60 minutes for the Wheat Kings.
Pratt’s goal at 16:30 of the third period tied the contest 4-4 and ultimately sent it to overtime. Neither team found the range in the five-minute OT session, forcing the shootout.
Kolle scored on Regina’s first attempt, but the Pats’ next four shooters couldn’t beat Brandon goalie Ethan Kruger. Stelio Mattheos sniped on Brandon’s second attempt and Burzan provided the game-winner in the fifth round.
Regina netminder Max Paddock made 38 saves through regulation and overtime, four more than Kruger.
