Moose Jaw’s executive committee is to gather after Monday night’s council meeting to go over the city’s current noise bylaw.
The review was sparked by loud music complaints and charges at a downtown dance studio earlier this month.
The owner of Dance Fitness with Kyra, Kyra Klassen, could be fined up to $2,000 if the court determines the noise is unreasonable.
Legendary rocker Burton Cummings of The Guess Who, who apparently lives nearby, is one of the complainants, according to Klassen.
When council met on March 11, a unanimously approved motion asked the administration to prepare a report re-evaluating how business licences are issued in areas of the city’s commercial district where there are also residential properties.
According to the executive committee’s Monday agenda, the administration came back to say that “the licensing bylaw is not the most effective way to address this issue” because it would limit the types of businesses permitted downtown and would detract people from living there.
Instead, the administration recommends an amendment to the city’s building bylaw.
Among the suggested amendments are changing the bylaw to forbid businesses from making continuous noise if they share a building with dwellings, and requiring homeowners who share a wall with a business to soundproof their space.
