Notorious pedophile Peter Whitmore is now looking for a “long lasting friendship” (sic) and one of his victims is raising the alarm.
In 2006, Whitmore kidnapped two boys, took them to a Saskatchewan farmhouse and sexually assaulted them over two days before being arrested. Whitmore was given a life sentence in a plea deal, with no attempt to designate him as a dangerous offender despite several previous convictions.
Now, Whitmore has a profile on the website Canadian Inmates Connect — a site where inmates can try to find pen pals.
In his profile, Whitmore said he’s looking for friendship with both women and men: “I am a very caring and loving person who cannot begin to describe my loneliness.”
Zach Miller was 10 when he was kidnapped by Whitmore. On Friday, Miller said dread and disgust were the first things he felt when he read Whitmore’s profile.
“He’s going to use this public tool to his advantage and he’s going to manipulate people and it’s just putting more people in danger, putting more children in danger,” said Miller.
Miller hasĀ a problem with the fact that all the site says about Whitmore’s crimes are the words “kidnapping” and “sexual assault” with no mention of details or previous crimes.
Miller called Whitmore a predator and a manipulator. He posited a scenario where someone who doesn’t know what Whitmore did strikes up a friendship and Whitmore asks that person for pictures of their family. Then Whitmore could have pictures of children.
Miller was also concerned about Whitmore getting into contact with other predators.
“He will be able to get through to these other people. He will be able to manipulate them into doing things and talk to him about it,” said Miller.
Miller also thinks Whitmore could be trying to drum up public sympathy. His profile talks about his mobility issues and jokes that he’s pathetic.
Miller said he thinks having contact with the outside world is good for some, like those who deserve a second chance, but not for people like Whitmore.
“When it comes to predators like this, people who prey on children or (are) labeled as dangerous offenders, they shouldn’t be allowed to do this. There should be a vetting system that prevents these people from going onto it,” Miller said.
Miller said he’s working on a petition to have laws put in place to prevent predators from getting access to the public. He said he’ll be sending it to the federal minister of justice, the minister of public safety and the prime minister.
Miller is tired of Whitmore coming up all the time. He said everyone is always worrying about Whitmore’s rights. Miller said he’s taking a stand with this.
“I’ve had a lot taken away. It’s time we start taking things away from these predators,” said Miller.
