Nothing tastes quite like vegetables straight from the garden.
Wayne Gienow from Lincoln Gardens in Lumsden says a number of veggies are in season right now.
“We’ve got fresh peas back on, which is pretty rare for mid-August but they’re nice. (There are) beautiful beans and tomatoes, new kinds of peppers,” Gienow told The Greg Morgan Morning Show on Wednesday.
“Cauliflower’s beautiful right now — nicest cauliflower we’ve had in years. Pretty much everything’s on the go right now except for corn. That’s going to be coming in about a week.”
Gienow said cucumbers are also popular for pickling.
He has also seen more demand for kohlrabi than he can keep up with.
“There’s always one or two things in a season that seem to be in. You kind of plan your season for what you’ve done in the past,” he said.
Gienow said he meets lots of people at his farm, like new Canadians stopping by for the fresh produce.
“It’s so much better than what you get in the large supermarkets … the taste and flavour and quality is so much more superior,” he said.
“I eat tomatoes when they’re in season and then basically I won’t buy them in the winter because there’s just not the quality we have in the field.”
