The Regina Thunder earned its third straight Prairie Football Conference win — and second straight against the Calgary Colts — with a 37-9 win at Leibel Field on Sunday.
The Thunder, which beat the Colts 66-6 one week earlier, allowed nine points in Sunday’s first quarter but that was all Calgary (1-6-0) would muster in the contest.
Calgary struck first, with running back Ike Okafor scoring on a 20-yard run. Kicker Matt Stackhouse was good on the convert. Shortly after that, Calgary’s defence forced a safety.
From that point on, the Thunder (5-2-0) took control of the game.
Kicker/running back Greg Lamb missed on a 27-yard field-goal attempt in the first quarter but was awarded a rouge for the team’s first point of the day.
Lamb scored on a one-yard rush in the second quarter. The Thunder converted on a two-point attempt to tie the game at 9-9. Lamb added his second rushing touchdown of the game in the second quarter as well.
Quarterback Blake Scherle connected with wide receiver Ethan Douglas twice for touchdowns, once in the third quarter and once in the fourth. Scherle finished the game with 364 yards passing and two touchdowns. Douglas had 106 receiving yards and the two TDs in the win.
Backup quarterback Tanner Zaharia also completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Sean Renouf. Lamb was good on all three of his convert attempts. The Thunder added another single late in the game.
The Thunder is to play the Winnipeg Rifles (1-6-0) in its regular-season finale on Oct. 13.
