It hasn’t even been two months since the crash, but on Thursday a Regina police officer pleaded guilty to drunk driving and was sentenced.
On Aug. 21, police responded to a crash on Lewvan Drive at Harbour Landing Drive. No one was hurt in the crash, but Scott Ash subsequently was charged with three counts of driving drunk.
It was initially referred to as a hit and run, and Ash was originally charged with leaving the scene of a crash. But that charge, along with another for impaired driving, were stayed.
Ash pleaded guilty Thursday to driving while over .08 and received a $3,000 fine and a one-year driving ban.
When he was charged, Ash was also placed on administrative leave, meaning he wasn’t at work at all.
Now that the criminal process is finished, the administrative investigation within the Regina Police Service can kick into gear, performed by the professional standards section of the service. As that continues, Ash will remain off duty.
The investigation will decide what sanction could be laid. Those could range from a formal warning letter (advice to future conduct) to suspension without pay to being fired from his job. The ultimate decision on a sanction will lay with Chief Evan Bray.
That process is expected to finish by the end of the year.
