It’s Hockey Week in Regina.
Mayor Michael Fougere issued a proclamation Monday calling for residents to celebrate hockey over the next seven days.
Regina is to play host to the Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic on Saturday and the WHL Prairie Classic on Sunday. Both games are to be played at Mosaic Stadium.
“Hockey is a big part of life in Canada,” Fougere said in a media release. “The game is about staying active and having fun.
“As a player, coach or fan, it brings people together and helps build strong communities. Hockey Week will be a demonstration of that spirit, as volunteers and our community partners are offering hockey-themed activities around the city that are fun for all ages.”
Fougere raised a Heritage Classic flag at City Hall on Monday to kick off the celebration. A number of events are scheduled for downtown Regina during the week, including a hockey film festival, a free outdoor pancake breakfast, a ball hockey tournament and a tailgate party.
The Brandt Centre will be the site of free skating events during the week.
Regina Transit is to provide free shuttle service from 5:45 p.m., to 8 p.m., on Saturday as well as after the NHL regular-season game between the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets. Faceoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Details about the shuttles can be found at Regina.ca/transit or by calling 306-777-7433.
On Sunday, the Regina Pats are to entertain the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL’s Prairie Classic. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
