The reality for those out trick-or-treating on Halloween night in Saskatchewan is usually a costume covered up by a winter jacket.
And with temperatures that are supposed to be in the low single digits on Thursday, this year is no different.
But it’s not all bad news for parents looking to take their kids out on Halloween and keeping them warm at the same time, according to mommy blogger Tenille Lafontaine.
“Primarily you want to make sure you are keeping the kids warm and comfortable or else it’s no fun for anybody. So the struggle parents are in is how do you fit that Halloween costume over a winter jacket and ski pants and gloves and ensure that the kids are still having fun?” she said.
“Because we have Halloween on a school day, your kids are able to wear those costumes to school and show their friends and really be part of the spirit of the season. So I suggest when it comes to trick-or-treating, maybe an accessory on their head from their princess costume or the mask that they wore to school would work.”
Another thing Lafontaine suggests is to take a couple of warmup breaks throughout the night, either in a car or at home with a warm drink, before heading back out.
“I know kids really want that independence, as they get older, to go door to door without mom and dad,” she said. “But if mom and dad could kind of be nearby with a running car that the kids can run into, maybe every block or two to warm up for five minutes, I think that will make you parent of the year this year if you can do that.”
However, Lafontaine says there is one trending costume this year that could be the solution to keeping kids warm without covering up the costume.
“Especially when you look at tweens and teens, it looks like the full-body onesie costume that we would traditionally look at as pajamas is really popular this year and I think that’s going to work really well with the weather the way it’s looking for keeping kids warm,” she said.
“So parents, if you are thinking that maybe you need an alternative, I know that I’ve seen many still out there in stores that you might want to consider. Plus as a bonus you could probably use them for pajama days at school as the winter goes on.”
