The University of Regina’s leadership forum is turning to a younger group.
On Tuesday, it brought together 1,600 high school- and university-aged women for the INSPIRE emerging leaders forum.
The half-day event took place at the Conexus Arts Centre and included speakers on the theme “You can have an impact.”
Charmaine Crooks, a five-time Canadian Olympian and a member of the International Olympic Committee, was one of the speakers.
“I’m just thrilled to be here and to be part of this amazing event with so many inspirational women, and to see the amount of young women in this community, future leaders, who are coming together,” Crooks said on the Greg Morgan Morning Show ahead of the event.
Crooks said it would be a day of impact and inspiration.
“And it’s a real reminder of where they are right now and hopefully we can have some great conversations and share our stories about how they can be future leaders and how they can have impact and inspiration in their community,” she said.
Crooks said she couldn’t have had the success she did without the people around her and on her team.
She said getting everyone together to share and listen will be fun.
Kelly Fraser — an Inuk singer/songwriter, 2019 Indspire Award winner and champion of Inuit rights — also spoke at the forum. So did Jaclyn Corin, a Parkland High School shooting survivor and lead organizer of March for our Lives.
The event is the first offshoot of the annual Inspiring Leadership Forum.
According to the university’s description of the event, the forum is meant to help young people develop the skills they need to become future leaders and to develop “the ability to see beyond the immediate; community building; and a deep sense of commitment to act for positive change in our world.”
