Several people inside Hudsons on 21st Street jumped into action on Tuesday night when gunshots rang out inside the hotspot.
“The quick and heroic actions of patrons in the establishment were able to detain the suspect at the scene and hold him until police arrived,” Insp. Cam McBride told reporters on Wednesday afternoon.
A 25-year-old man remains in custody following the shooting, in which no one was hurt.
“It’s never our expectation as a police service that a member of the public would place themselves in imminent harm where they could face serious injury or death,” McBride said.
He explains that incidents like Tuesday night’s shooting are not common in Saskatoon, but they do happen.
“We’re forced to look at each one individually and try and understand what the individual is thinking in the moment,” McBride said.
He could not provide much information about the ongoing investigation in the update Wednesday.
“We’re going to look at any video surveillance that may be available either from the establishment itself or from the surrounding area. We’re going to take the witness accounts and try to probe into the visual observations of people,” he said of the work underway.
McBride said it’s not clear what the motive for the shooting is and police continue to work to determine that and what happened leading up to the incident.
