It appears some workers at Evraz Steel in Regina are going to be missing more days’ wages as the company tries to deal with the fallout from a continent-wide cyber attack.
The company confirmed the attack on Thursday.
The plant was essentially shut down and all shifts were cancelled for Thursday night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday as Evraz attempted to deal with the attack. There are about 1,200 employees at the Regina location.
On Friday afternoon, the United Steelworkers of America local that represents the Regina workers posted an update to its website.
It said Evraz was now planning to lay off everyone in the pipe division starting Thursday next week for two weeks “until (the company) can resolve the issues surrounding the cyber attack.”
Workers in the steel division were still expected to be back at work on Monday.
The union also mentioned that a shutdown for the steel division that was scheduled for the end of the month was being moved up to start on Friday, and the layoff for March 12 would “most likely be cancelled.”
