Here is hoping more organizations watch The Last Dance and don’t fear giving behind-the-curtain access that is rare, and seems more rare by the day.
The Chicago Bulls, the NBA and Michael Jordan gave a crew a lot more access to their 1997-98 season. That season was dubbed The Last Dance by head coach Phil Jackson, who was told he had one year and he was gone. It signalled the end of the Bulls dynasty that won six championships in eight years.
While we’re only four episodes in, the documentary has given us a fantastic look back at the greatest player ever and the greatest team ever but also a greater appreciation for what the reality of pro sports actually is.
Big money, big ego, big personalities and big moments.
Fans want more than just the clichés and highlights now. They actually deserve more with the money they put down for tickets, gear and gambling.
If I was going to pick a documentary film crew to take on one team this year, it would be the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Either it’s a documentary on Tom Brady’s greatest triumph or of a complete flop for one of the game’s greats.
Either way, it would be a must-watch.
