The Queen City Ex has been cancelled for the first time in its history.
In a media release Wednesday, Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) announced the 2020 version of the annual fair had been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The exhibition, formerly known as Buffalo Days, was been held annually for more than 130 years.
“As heartbreaking as the decision was to make, REAL and the advisory committee feel that the safety of the community, staff and visitors is the top priority,” the media release said.
The exhibition was to be held July 29 to Aug. 2 on the grounds at Evraz Place.
The news comes one day after another major outdoor event in southern Saskatchewan — Country Thunder Saskatchewan in Craven — also was cancelled due to the threat of the coronavirus.
Despite the event’s cancellation, REAL and Prairie Mobile are staging a “Taste of QCX” for people who would have been going to the fair.
On Friday, patrons are invited to drive through Evraz Place to pick up pre-ordered mini donuts. Donuts are $6 a bag and can be pre-ordered online.
All proceeds from the sale will be matched by Prairie Mobile, with all funds to go to the Regina Food Bank.
Two complimentary tickets to the 2021 Queen City Ex will be presented with every mini donut order, as will a $25 in-store credit to Prairie Mobile.
As well, non-perishable food donations can be made Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., in front of the Brandt Centre’s main box office entrance.
