There is a push from nearly every single member on Regina city council to rename the plaza adjacent to Victoria Park after a former mayor.
Eight councillors, along with Mayor Michael Fougere, have signed a notice of motion proposing to rename City Square Plaza after Pat Fiacco.
The public space is the site for a number of events throughout the year, including a farmer’s market, music festivals and outdoor skating in the winter.
Two councillors did not sign the motion, which is scheduled to be presented at Wednesday’s meeting — Andrew Stevens of Ward 3 and Jason Mancinelli of Ward 9.
Fiacco, a four-term mayor who served from 2000 to 2012, is being credited by the signatories for his volunteer work, efforts to raise civic pride as well as his contributions to city building.
“Pat Fiacco displayed a strong commitment to revitalizing Regina’s downtown and inner city by playing an integral role in the creation of the Downtown Neighbourhood Plan, which resulted in the construction of the City Square Plaza,” the motion reads.
It continues that he “led the planning process behind the Regina Revitalization Initiative, which includes the construction of the new Mosaic Stadium, the redevelopment of the railyards lands north of downtown, and the redevelopment of the former Mosaic Stadium.”
