A late-night apartment building fire in Esterhazy caused damage early Friday morning.
Matthew Maier, a service technician with SaskEnergy, was called out to the scene to work on the gaslines.
He said it started at around midnight.
“Coming into Esterhazy from the west side, you could see the glow for a while. It was a pretty intense fire at the beginning,” he said.
980 CJME has reached out to the Esterhazy Volunteer Fire Department to determine the cause of the fire. It has not responded yet, but Maier said witnesses think it may have been due to a lightning strike.
“Just listening to some locals here, they heard a crack of thunder just after midnight. Shortly after that, they said the roof was engulfed in flames,” he said.
He gave an update of what he was seeing at about 5 a.m.
“Fire crews are trying to get most of the hot spots under control. There are no more flames blazing out of the roof right now, but there is definitely smoke coming out of all floors,” he said.
