Regina’s two largest school divisions have unveiled revamped scheduling plans for high schools for the 2020-21 school year.
The school year is to start Sept. 8. The Government of Saskatchewan has asked school divisions to come up with plans for the resumption of classes while dealing with the threat of COVID-19.
Regina Public Schools will be using a “quint schedule,” in which students will be taking two classes per day — one in the morning and one in the afternoon — in each of the five learning terms during the year.
Each period is to be 160 minutes long, with staggered 10-minute breaks.
Each of the quints would last for about 35 days (Sept. 8 to Oct. 28, Oct. 30 to Dec. 18, Jan. 5 to March 1, March 3 to May 3, and May 5 to June 23).
The start of the school day, lunch hours, breaks and dismissals are to be staggered. Start times are to be determined by each school, with students to get updated timetables before school starts Sept. 8.
The division said the quint schedule will mean fewer interactions between students and staff members as well as reduced interactions between multiple groups of students.
The Regina Catholic School Division announced its high schools will use a block schedule, comprising four terms of three periods each.
Each of the first two periods of the day will be 128 minutes long, with scheduled break times and staggered lunches. The final period will be 64 minutes in duration.
“This will limit movement between classes, limit the number of student-student contacts, and minimize the number of teachers working with students while maximizing student learning opportunities and student engagement,” the division said in a statement on its website.
More information is to be provided to students in the coming days.
