Emmarae Dale will go down as a trailblazer for women looking to compete at the highest levels of football in Canada.
The new University of Saskatchewan graduate is now a member of one of the most successful programs in the nation as she joins the Saskatoon Hilltops.
The standout linebacker for the WWCFL-champion Saskatoon Valkyries was just the right age, with the right coach and the right attitude and ability to make it happen.
Hilltops defensive co-ordinator Jeff Yausie has also coached the Valkyries and saw Dale’s work ethic and athleticism grow to the point where he couldn’t resist but make the recommendation to bring her on.
Of course, there are the skeptics who say she might get hurt or this is a public relations move. But since when has Saskatoon head coach Tom Sargeant made those types of moves on his way to his multiple national championships?
And Dale, the kinesiology grad, is well aware of the physiological differences. She also has the right attitude. She wants nothing given, everything earned with no guarantees.
It’ll be up to her to prove she can play with the boys, just like anybody trying to make the team.
She’s just the first and hopefully won’t be the last.
