When the Stanley Cup is handed out this fall, a Saskatoon family is hoping to see their son once again hoisting the NHL’s biggest prize.
Brayden Schenn won the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues last year.
This season, he is cheering on his older brother Luke, a defenceman with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
“How excited Luke was last year for Brayden to win, and how exciting it is for Brayden seeing Luke getting a chance this year has been a lot of fun,” said their dad, Jeff Schenn.
The family got to share Brayden’s big moment together on the ice in Boston last year.
Jeff Schenn recalled how exciting that moment was compared to watching the games on TV this year.
“It’s not the same,” he said. “It has been totally different, but as it gets closer and closer, it’s certainly getting exciting. Still, to put your name on the Stanley Cup is a dream come true for Luke.”
Luke and his teammates have been inside the NHL’s bubble for nearly two months without any in-person contact with his family.
The adjustment has not been easy. Luke and his wife had just had their second child and were enjoying the downtime together while the league was shut down at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“He spent a ton of time with his kids and then all of sudden, boom they gotta leave,” Jeff said. “Thank God for FaceTime. It’s been tough.”
Luke was not in the lineup Monday night for the Lightning’s 3-2 victory to even the series at one game apiece.
Game 3 is set for Wednesday night at Rogers Arena in Edmonton.
