Even in the COVID era, people are still having fun with Halloween.
Many houses across Regina have intricate displays set up, with hours of hard work put in to make the lawn seem like something out of a horror movie.
Kat Donnelly is one such proud decorator. Her house on Habkirk Drive in the Albert Park neighbourhood is outfitted with witches, graves, man-eating plants and more.
What’s most impressive is that she rarely outright buys decorations from the store.
“I would say I built about 75 per cent of it,” she explained.
“Halloween is rooted in homemade costumes, props and decorations. That’s where I wanted to go back to. I feel that it gives it a personal touch, a different feeling than anyone else.”
She has been going all out for about 15 years, but it felt especially good to decorate this year.
“For me, it feels really good. I feel like this is giving back to the neighbourhood kids. It feels good for me to be doing something, especially during these times of not doing anything for so long … I’m really happy to do it,” she said.
She plans to follow the province’s guidelines for safe trick-or-treating and is even using it as an opportunity for more decoration.
“We’re going to put a social distancing square out, and then we’re gonna put monster feet out for distancing if we have a line … I will be wearing a mask and gloves, and maybe handing out candy with tongs. I just want the kids to enjoy something this year because of COVID and how it has affected so much,” she explained.

Donnelly’s neighbour, Jenna Fahrenschon, doesn’t have quite as elaborate of a display, but it’s quite creative.
A water main break just by her house forced crews to dig up her lawn for repairs.
“I’m just trying to make the best of it. I’m trying to make it look like it’s a grave for Halloween … This is a perfect spot,” she said with a laugh.
Many houses in the area are similarly decked out, which Donnelly is quite happy about.
“This neighbourhood is really, really good because there are a lot of kids in the neighbourhood, so that we all do our part and make Halloween fun for them,” she said.
“(There is) a little bit of competition, but it’s just friendly competition,” she said with a chuckle.
