A person in their 80s from the north-central area of Saskatchewan has died after testing positive for COVID-19.
The death — the 29th connected to COVID in Saskatchewan since March — was announced Monday, when the province also reported new single-day highs in new cases (190) and people in hospital (37).
It’s the fourth death recorded in the province in the past three days. It’s the first time since the pandemic began that Saskatchewan has reported at least one COVID-related fatality in three straight days.
The total number of cases in Saskatchewan since March is now 4,087.
Of the new cases reported Monday, 76 were in the Saskatoon area. There also were 25 new cases in the Regina region, 19 in the northwest, 15 in the north-central zone, 15 in the far northwest, eight in the central-east area, seven in the southeast, six in the northeast, five in the southwest, four in the far northeast, two in the central-west area and one in each of the far north-central and south-central areas.
The hometowns of six of the new cases remain under investigation.
There were 22 recoveries reported Monday, increasing that total so far to 2,769. The total number of active cases being reported is an all-time provincial high of 1,289.
There are eight people in intensive care in Saskatchewan hospitals, with four in Saskatoon and two in each of the Regina and north-central regions.
Of the 29 people receiving inpatient care, there are 14 in Saskatoon, six in the north-central area, four in the Regina region, two in the northwest and one in each of the far northwest, far northeast and southeast zones.
There have been 1,129 cases from the Saskatoon area, 884 in the north, 573 in the Regina region, 547 from the south , 504 in the far north and 437 from the central zone.
The hometowns of 13 cases are pending.
The total comprises 1,871 community contacts, 941 cases that are under investigation by local public health, 887 cases that don’t have any known exposures, and 388 travellers.
To date, 120 health-care workers have contracted the virus. That number has gone up by 21 this month.
So far, there have been 1,488 cases provincially in the 20-to-39 age range, 1,157 between the ages of 40 and 59, 832 involving people 19 and under, 507 in the 60-to-79 range, and 103 aged 80 and over.
The 2,505 tests done in Saskatchewan on Sunday increased the total to date to 284,021.
Saskatchewan’s per capita rate as of Saturday was 188,720 people tested per million population, well below the national rate of 264,310 people tested per million population.
